Can I use a chainsaw to cut sleepers?
We don’t recommend using a chainsaw or a saw to cut sleepers because they can be dangerous and messy. It can be difficult to work with sleeping people.
How do you cut a wooden sleeper?
Slowly cutting your sleepers with a circular saw or a chainsaw is the best way to do it. You should use a square angle ruler to make sure your sleeping arrangements are perfect. The Luxury Wood Company will precut sleepers for you if you request it.
How do you fix railway sleepers to the ground?
The bottom sleepers should be sunk into the ground to half their depth and then drill holes in them. Fix the next layer of sleepers with 150mm long dowels and lock them into matching holes. The next layer of railway sleepers needs to be fixed.
Can I cut a railway sleeper with a hand saw?
It is likely that a good handsaw will be the best one for you. You could simply knock up a giant box and use the sawn ends of other sleepers as a guide if you wanted to.

The average lifespan of hardwood oak sleepers is around 100 years. If it sits on the ground, it will last between three and five years, while if it is treated, it will last between 20 and 30 years.
Can you lay sleepers on soil?
It is possible to place your sleepers directly on the soil, which will allow the heavy sleepers time to bed in. Simply dig a shallow trench and place your sleepers on top of the gravel or sand foundation.
Can you lay sleepers on sharp sand?
This is the best time to add finishing touches to your sleeping arrangements. If you want to make sure each board has a nice even foundation, lay sand in your channels or dug area. You can pack it down using one of your sleepers.
